Bridlington Quay Detecting Society
At The Driffield Farmers Show
16th July 208
The Driffield Farmers Show, Tuesday Paul & I (Dave) arrived on site to mark out the pitch and set up ready for the volunteers to arrive in the afternoon, also to position the motorhome, club HQ, well you have to have a place to brew up. Rob, Don, Len & Charly arrived so the work could start in earnest. We started to put the gazebo up, then sods law stepped in, in the guise of the wind, well the gazebo was nearly air born. Don our X chairman had some rope in his car, we tied the rope to the gazebo, Don tied it to himself and acted like a human anchor. We managed to get it pegged down & start putting the tables in, all that done the helpers all set off for home, they asked if I woul be OK yes no problem, if the gazebo gets away it will only land in yon trees over there, you see I volunteered to stay on site over night
Next day they all arrived, the show cases laid out on the tables, all the donated bumf laid out we are now ready for the punters. It was a bit disapointing, but as the day went on people started coming in to look at the finds. The adults & children kept the members talking by asking all about detecting, and their coins & artefacts. The main event was the detecting demonstration, we were inundated with kids wanting to to try the detectors. Earlier on in the morning we had seeded the detecting area with some old coins & finds, also a few Roman coins had been popped in. The high light of the day was when some of the kids found the Roman coins, one girl said "I don`t beleive it he`s found a Roman coin". The army cadets appeared and they kept Len & Rob busy with the detecting and asking questions galore.
I would like to thank Brian Booth for coming along with his show cases, & also our members who brought along their show cases, & the members who looked after the detecting patch; it is not a one man operation, but club members pulling together, because without these people it would never have happened.
